Projects

I've worked on a wide range of projects. In the technology sector I’ve designed successful products and managed their implementation. In my consulting business I translated customer needs into solutions and negotiated contracts. As an advocate, I worked to end violence against women, protect the environment, and increase voting by teenagers. Whatever the domain, I’ve always looked for work that, in large ways or small, made the world a better place.

Steady Type

Steady Type is a touch-screen keyboard designed for people with hand tremors and other movement disorders. I designed the software, managed the implementation, and conducted user-testing to verify and improve the design. Steady Type was granted a US Patent in 2019.

18by Vote

18by Vote is a nonpartisan, youth-led organization that helps 16, 17, and 18-year-olds understand how, when, and why to vote. I envisioned and cofounded the organization in the aftermath of the 2016 election. It remains the only national organization focused solely on increasing voter registration and turnout of teenagers.

Learning Touch

Learning Touch developed and sells educational apps for iPhones and iPads. I designed the apps and managed all aspects of their development and marketing. Released in 2008, First Words was the first interactive spelling app in the iOS App Store, and was the #1 kids iPad app for several months. Learning Touch apps were widely adopted by typically developing children as well as children with special needs.

Green Century Capital Management

Green Century Capital Management manages a family of environmentally-focused mutual funds.  As their first Director of Shareholder Advocacy, I expanded and managed their program of engagement with companies about their environmental practices, using a combination of carrots and sticks to push companies to improve their performance.

V-Day

V-Day is the global movement to end violence against women and girls founded by Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues.  As the Technology Directory at V-Day I applied Internet technology to support V-Day's mission. I was responsible for V-Day’s online presence, marketing, and community tools and led a variety of special projects. For example, I researched, purchased, and configured satellite phones given to women in remote regions of Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

Dylan

Dylan was a new programming language designed at Apple. At a time when the majority of software was written in C and C++, Dylan provided automatic memory management, an integrated object system, and integrated support for functional programming.  I led the Dylan language design effort, and authored the Dylan Reference Manual, published by Addison-Wesley.

MCL

Macintosh Common Lisp (MCL) was an award-winning software development environment for the Macintosh, described by Peter Norvig as his "favorite IDE on the Macintosh platform for any language and... a serious rival to those on other platforms." I was a member of the original MCL team, and was one of five employees who was hired by Apple when they acquired the product.
